Year-End Financial Review: Setting Goals for 2027
As the year winds down, it’s easy to let your finances get pushed behind the holiday shopping, family gatherings, and everything else on your to-do list. But setting aside a little time before December 31 can help you head into the new year with a clearer picture of your money and a plan for what comes next.
At Wellspring CU, we’ve spent more than 65 years helping families across the Golden Triangle save, plan, and grow. Whether you’re in Beaumont, Orange, Bridge City, or anywhere else across Southeast Texas, here’s a simple year-end financial checkup you can knock out in an afternoon.
Why a Year-End Financial Review Matters
Think of this as a quick check-in with your money. What worked this year? What didn’t? And what would you like to change before January arrives?
Start by gathering your most recent checking, savings, loan, and credit card statements. You don’t need a complicated spreadsheet. Just jot down:
What you currently have in savings
What you owe on loans and credit cards
Your biggest monthly expenses
Any recurring charges you no longer need
How much you’re regularly putting toward savings
That simple snapshot can show you where your money is going and where you have room to make a change.
Take a Closer Look at Your Spending
Look back at the last three to six months of transactions. Pay attention to subscriptions you forgot about, spending categories that have increased, and purchases that come up again and again.
This isn’t about judging your spending. It’s about finding information you can use. If you notice you’re spending $50 a month on something you barely use, that’s $600 a year you could redirect toward a financial goal.
Set Financial Goals You Can Actually Keep
“Save more” is a good intention, but a specific goal is easier to follow.
Try giving each goal a dollar amount and a deadline:
Short-term: Save $500 for an emergency fund by March.
Mid-term: Put $100 from every paycheck toward next year’s holiday spending.
Long-term: Save $5,000 toward a future home down payment over the next two years.
Then break the goal into smaller steps. A $1,200 goal might sound intimidating, but saving $100 a month makes it much easier to tackle.
Put Your Money in the Right Place
Once you know what you’re working toward, make sure your accounts are helping you get there.
For everyday spending, Earn Well Checking can reward you for banking habits you may already have, like using your debit card, receiving direct deposit, and using eStatements. Qualifying balances can earn dividends, and the account remains free even when you don’t meet the monthly qualifications.
For an emergency fund or another short- to mid-term goal, Save Well Savings gives you a dedicated place to keep your savings separate from everyday spending. Its tiered rates can help your savings grow as your balance grows.
For money you’re confident you won’t need right away, a certificate can provide a set rate for a specific term. Just remember that early withdrawals can reduce your earnings, so certificates generally work best for money you can leave untouched.

Give Retirement and Education Savings a Checkup, Too
If retirement or education is part of your plan, the end of the year is a good time to see whether you’re making regular contributions.
Wellspring CU offers Traditional and Roth IRAs, as well as an Education Savings account for qualified education expenses. Our team can help you understand your options and choose an account that fits your goals and timeline.
Your New Year Money Checklist
Before you wrap up your year-end review, make sure you’ve checked these five things:
Emergency savings: Can you cover an unexpected expense without reaching for a credit card?
High-interest debt: Which balance is costing you the most in interest?
Automatic savings: Can you set up a recurring transfer, even if it’s a small amount?
Account details: Are your beneficiaries and contact information up to date?
Subscriptions: Are you still paying for services you don’t use?
And don’t wait until next December to check in again. Put a six-month financial review on your calendar now.
Start the New Year With a Plan
You don’t need to overhaul your entire financial life before January 1. Take an honest look at where you are, choose a few specific goals, and make one or two changes that will move you in the right direction.
